Built in 1930 at 1619 Broadway, just north of Times Square, stood the beautiful Brill Building. Clothing store owners the Brill brothers purchased the entire building and rented space there to publishers and others associated with the pop music business. It became known as the actual home of the mythical Tin Pan Alley and the center for popular music in the country. |
At the Brill Building one could find a manager, write songs, make demos and find a publisher, all within the confines of a single building. Some of the great song writing teams to emerge from the venue included: |
Jeff
Barry and Ellie Greenwich
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman Burt Bacharach and Hal David Hugo and Luigi |
Many hits were born at the Brill Building and many groups got their start there. It was the heart and soul of the music industry, but 1650 and 1697 Broadway just a few doors north were also very significant bases for the early music scene. |
